Card meanings, spreads, and developing your own intuitive reading practice.

Reading the Cards

Tarot is a tool for reflection, not prediction. At its heart, a tarot reading is a structured conversation with your own intuition โ€” the cards provide a framework, and you bring the meaning. This is the most important thing to understand before you begin.

The standard tarot deck contains 78 cards divided into two sections: the Major Arcana (22 cards representing major life themes and archetypal forces) and the Minor Arcana (56 cards representing everyday situations across four suits).

The Major Arcana

The 22 Major Arcana cards tell the story of the Fool โ€” an archetypal journey from innocence through experience to wholeness. Each card represents a universal theme: The High Priestess (intuition and mystery), The Tower (sudden change and revelation), The Star (hope and healing). When Major Arcana cards appear in a reading, they often signal significant themes or turning points.

The Minor Arcana

The 56 Minor Arcana cards are divided into four suits, each associated with an element and area of life. Wands (fire) โ€” passion, creativity, and will. Cups (water) โ€” emotion, relationships, intuition. Swords (air) โ€” thought, communication, conflict. Pentacles (earth) โ€” material matters, work, the body.

Simple Spreads to Begin With

One Card Daily Draw โ€” The simplest and most sustainable practice. Draw a single card each morning and sit with the question: what energy am I being invited to explore today?

Three Card Spread โ€” Past / Present / Future, or Situation / Action / Outcome, or Mind / Body / Spirit. A versatile spread that works for almost any question.

Celtic Cross โ€” A 10-card spread for deeper readings. Best approached once you have some comfort with the three-card spread.

Developing Your Practice

The best way to learn tarot is to read, journal, and trust yourself. There is no single correct interpretation for any card โ€” your relationship with the cards will evolve over time and that is exactly as it should be.

"The cards do not tell you what will happen. They show you what is already present โ€” in yourself, in the situation, in the energy around you."
