Crystals & Stones

๐Ÿ”ฎ

Working with stones โ€” a guide for beginners and experienced practitioners alike.

Working with Crystal Energy

Crystals have been used by humans for thousands of years โ€” as tools, talismans, medicines, and objects of beauty. Whether you approach them through the lens of metaphysics, geology, or simply aesthetic appreciation, there is something profound in holding a stone that formed over millions of years inside the earth.

At Alternative Reflection, we carry crystals for every purpose and every practitioner. Here is a foundation to help you begin โ€” or deepen โ€” your work with stones.

How Crystals Are Used

Crystals are most commonly used for intention setting, meditation, energy work, and as physical anchors for focused thought. Common practices include: carrying a stone in your pocket for daily support, placing crystals on the body during meditation or rest, arranging them in your home or workspace, and using them as focal points during ritual or journaling.

A Starter Guide to Common Stones

Amethyst โ€” Calming, protective, intuition-enhancing. Excellent for meditation, sleep, and spiritual connection. One of the most versatile and accessible crystals for beginners.

Clear Quartz โ€” The master amplifier. Amplifies intention and the energy of surrounding stones. Excellent for clarity, focus, and general energy work.

Rose Quartz โ€” The stone of unconditional love. Supports self-love, emotional healing, compassion, and all matters of the heart.

Black Tourmaline โ€” Grounding and protective. Creates a shield against negative energy; excellent for empaths and highly sensitive people.

Citrine โ€” Joy, abundance, and confidence. One of the few crystals that does not need cleansing โ€” it is said to transmute rather than absorb energy.

Obsidian โ€” Deep protective stone formed from volcanic glass. Excellent for shadow work, truth-telling, and cutting cords to old patterns.

Selenite โ€” High-vibrational cleansing stone. Used to clear and charge other crystals, and to create a calm, clear energetic environment.

Cleansing & Caring for Your Crystals

Crystals absorb and interact with energy โ€” including our own. Regular cleansing resets their vibrational state. Common methods include: moonlight (especially the full moon), sound cleansing with singing bowls or bells, sage or palo santo smoke, placing on selenite, or briefly running under cool water (note: not all crystals are water-safe โ€” always check first).

"There is no wrong way to work with a crystal. Your intention is the most powerful element in any practice."

Choosing Your First Crystals

We always recommend starting with three: one for protection (black tourmaline or obsidian), one for clarity (clear quartz or amethyst), and one that simply calls to you. Trust that draw โ€” it is often the most reliable guide in crystal work.
